The role of the British Microlight Aircraft Association is to look after the interests and concerns of microlight aircraft pilots in the United Kingdom. This organization operates as an approved association of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). The primary goals of this organization are to promote the sport of ultralight/microlight aviation,
help to maintain costs for its members, and to represent its members when they are challenged on national and/or international levels, as these matters relate to the sport of microlight/ultralight aviation.
The British Microlight Aircraft Association is the official delegate for the Royal Aero Club, serving to provide support in all matters that relate to the sport of ultralight/microlight aviation. They work directly with the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI), which directs and supports sport aviation in Europe.
The British Microlight Aircraft Association is headed by a chief executive officer who manages daily operations. Management of activities for the association are directed by volunteers that are elected for a term of three years. Election are held at annual general meetings.
The British Microlight Aircraft Association publishes a magazine called "Microlight Flying". This publication covers many of the aspects of microlight aviation that are of interest to light sport pilots. Topics include flight reports, competition news, technical interest, and a section where BMAA members can advertise their products and services.
For ultralight/microlight pilots interested in a light sport competitions, the British Microlight Aircraft Association is an excellent resource for this as well. Competitions are organized each year, and provide pilots with opportunities to improve their skills, or just come out to the event and enjoy the day. During this event top pilots will be selected based on their performance, to represent the United Kingdom in Europe and at the international level.
