One of the fundamentals of a good short game is to have the correct set-up for your chip shots. The following four pointers will help you improve your set-up and consequently improve your chipping.
To be successful with your short game you have to be able to get up and down in as few shots as possible. This makes pitching and chipping the ball so important because you want to get the ball as close to the hole as possible to only have one putt.
Poor quality chip shots are often the result of an incorrect set-up. So here are a couple of pointers to help you set-up correctly for chipping and pitching.
1) Your stance should be slightly open when addressing the ball and your shoulders should be parallel to the intended line of the chip.
2) Choke down on the grip, which basically means grip the club lower down. This will improve your feel of the shot and give you more club head control as you proceed through your swing.
3) Put the ball back in your stance and hold your hands forward. This will cause you to hit down on the ball increasing the consistency with which you strike the ball and removing the possibility of hitting the ball in the teeth.
4) Keep your chin up so that you are almost looking down your nose at the golf ball. This will cause your spine to be in a more erect position resulting in a better posture and giving your left shoulder more room to turn as it moves under your chin.
To help you improve your chipping and pitching you should practice hitting your shots with the above set-up routine. You should see a dramatic improvement in the consistency of your strokes and the purity with which you strike the ball. I hope this helps.
