There are two institutions in America governed by PBUC, Professional Baseball Umpire Corporation. You need to be certified and recommended by one of these schools to be allowed to umpire a major league match. Every year a six week evaluation is held in Florida by these two institutions. Candidates have to show their full potential in the class and in the field in these six weeks. Only 5 to 10 percent of about 200 candidates are selected from each school for another level of evaluation held in March. The students who are up to the mark are offered recommendation to umpire minor league matches and are awarded an A level. For these candidates the hardships of umpire training are just beginning. PBUC officials would visit the matches and check the level of matches. Their visit is mostly not known to anyone. From here the level of the umpire increases from a single A to double A; later AAA level is reached and the umpire is allowed to umpire major league matches.This is quite a tough time for the umpires, since they would only earn about $12000 per season with a single A level. However once you are recommended for a major league match, you can earn up to $200,000 per year. Students, who are not selected, resume their careers at whichever level they want.
