Important BMX safety tips
BMX can be a dangerous sport if you don't know what you're doing. The following article outlines safety tips you should consider when learning to BMX.
For people who ride BMX bikes,
there are certain things that should be taken into serious consideration. Many of these things can be seen on BMX videos on the internet, but even more have been shown in BMX photos of people being injured while riding. People such as Chase Hawk have gone through their own injuries, but end up pulling out of them. This has caused many young riders to feel they are invincible and not wear protective gear because it’s ‘not cool’ or ‘looks stupid’. These types of comments are the reason why children are harmed in accidents during BMX riding. The single most important safety tip while riding a BMX bike, or any bike, is to always wear a helmet. This will keep the most important body part safe in the event of a crash. Hitting the concrete might not kill someone, but if their head does it can, and more than likely will. Be sure that the helmet is lightweight, yet strong. The helmet must fit tightly, but not so tight that pain occurs. Also, being sure that the helmet has holes so that your scalp can breathe is a great idea for hot days, or strenuous activities.A great thing to always keep an eye out for is liquid spills, or dustings of sand or snow. These things can all cause a person to lose control of their bike and crash. Traction can easily be lost on slick surfaces, so never ride while it is raining, snowing, or windy.Wearing racing pants that are made of a stronger material then cloth are great because they do not tear. This will save a person from cutting themselves up badly in the event of a crash. Padded pants are even better as it can prevent blunt impact damage. The best shoes to wear are those that have great traction. The more pedal traction a person has, the better they can stay on their bike. Socks should also always cover the ankles to prevent from rocks and sharp items on the ground, or scrapes from the pedals. Buying tire grips for the pedals is also sound advice in order to keep stability and maintain it on rocky or unstable areas.Tire pressure is incredibly important. Be sure to check the exact pressure that the tires on a bike have. Do not overfill the tires, or they can burst. Do not under fill them as they will become unstable. Finding a BMX video that shows tires bursting is more than enough of a reason to keep the tires properly maintained.
