Are Saints Super Bowl Contenders? The Saints are only a couple of seasons removed from their big Super Bowl season. Much of that team’s success was attributed to the quick attack offense and this season’s team seems to be following that same model. The New Orleans defense has been steady,
but nothing that would seem to indicate that they are championship caliber. But, the defense can be run of the mill when you have a quarterback like Drew Brees helping the offense pile up touchdowns. While Aaron Rodgers of the Green Bay Packers and Tom Brady of the New England Patriots seem to grab all the headlines, Brees has quietly asserted himself as an elite quarterback in the NFL. All three of these signal callers are quality leaders with Super Bowl rings. Those are big reasons why these teams are considered favorites to make it to the big game at Lucas Field in Indianapolis this February. Brees, like Brady and Rodgers, were not sure-fire-can’t-miss prospects coming out of college. And, like his counter parts, he spent his first season behind a football icon in Doug Flutie. But, unlike Brady and Rodgers, Brees didn’t stick with his original team even though he evolved into a Pro-Bowler with the San Diego Chargers. He was said to lack size and arm strength even though he had put up solid numbers in four years as the Charger QB. San Diego went in a different direction and drafted Philip Rivers, which led to Brees signing with New Orleans as a free agent. Since joining the Saints, Drew Brees has been putting up record numbers. In the three seasons prior to the championship season, he threw for an incredible 14,000 yards with 88 touchdowns to boot. But he didn’t stop there. In the Saints Super Bowl season, he completed an NFL record 70% of his passes while throwing for 34 scores. As good as Brees has been, he is on track to have his best season ever in 2011. Through seven games, he is on pace for 5,700 passing yards, 41 touchdowns, a completion percentage of 71% and a passer rating of over 104. Even though he seems to play in the shadows of other NFL stars, there is no denying that Drew Brees is on his way to Canton and the NFL Hall of Fame. He already has the credentials but undoubtedly has another five or six good years left in him. Take note, one of the greatest QB’s to ever suit up in the NFL is hiding in plain site. It’s possible that Drew Brees and his New Orleans Saints will be at Lucas Field in Indianapolis for the Super Bowl in February. While it’s only a possibility for the Saints, it can be a reality for you!
