Caller ID (caller identification) may be defined as a telephony feature feasible in analog as well as digital phone systems. This feature transmits a caller's number to the called party's telephone equipment during the ringing signal,
and in any case before the call is answered.
The caller ID is also capable of furnishing a name pertaining to the calling telephone number. This critical information is either displayed on a telephone's display or on a separate attachable device or through an enabled computer with suitable interface hardware. Outbound Caller ID allows you to select both the name and number you would like to appear on your recipient's Caller ID.
It must be noted that Caller ID feature is rampantly in use in most countries across the world. A modem can pass Caller ID information to a computer for purposes of call logging or call blocking, but this process can get complicated as modems in different countries are not of the same technical design. The possible hardware or software incompatibilities can impede the functioning of Caller ID feature.
Nonetheless, many modems are designed and programmed to handle multiple signaling methods and can be configured to become acceptable to the local standard.
The question arises about the usefulness of the Caller ID feature. Caller ID may be used to track down and/or restrict the persistent calls from telemarketers, mischievous calls, anonymous calls and other annoying unsolicited incoming calls. Caller-ID has extensive valuable applications for law enforcement agencies, detectives, investigators etc.
The Caller ID feature also has another strong application. Some Internet service providers (ISPs) providing dial-up access desire the subscribers to avail Caller ID feature so as to prevent abuse of the account by unauthorized callers.
If you have a Caller ID box attached to your phone, then every time your phone rings the number as well as the name of the calling party appears on the display immediately after the first ring.
Many service providers will offer you Caller ID facility for both outbound and inbound calls. Incoming Caller ID is displayed with all incoming calls. When incoming Caller id matches relevant contact particular in your account, then the name is also displayed. Caller ID can also be stored in the call logs so that you can check the calls you have received as also calls you might have missed.
Caller ID controller allows you to select which number you want to display when calling regular phones. The standard default number presented is your 0844 number but with Caller id control you can change this to any of your other numbers or restrict your Caller id so it's not displayed.
The Caller-ID Controller also allows you to make digital recordings of your telephone conversations. These can be later accessed and reviewed - but using only your telephone. Please know that it is illegal to record a telephone conversation without the knowledge and consent of all parties involved.
In most cases, Caller ID controller is designed to not work on calls to 911 and toll-free numbers. It will not work on international calls. Each Caller-ID Controller generally provides 60 minutes of total usage time. International calls may however provide a higher rate, thus reducing the minutes provided.
When purchasing Caller-ID Controller, you should agree to use it only for lawful purposes. Telemarketers and debt collectors are barred by federal law from misleading or concealing the phone number from which they are calling.
