The Down-to-hole (DTH) hammer is undoubtedly one of the most important equipments for the mining and drilling projects. From boring to precise drilling, the hammer can give a host of advantages to many infrastructure projects. In fact, it’s safe to say that most modern rigs or drilling projects would be impossible to imagine without the existence of the DTH hammer.
How does it work?
This hammer can be compared to a mini jack hammer that is fastened with screws below a drill string. Through rapid hammering actions on the rig attached to it, the hammers are forced to get fast movements that break hard rock into small flakes and the resulting dust is removed by the air exhaust blown through the hammer. Since its invention in the 1950s, drill hammers still rule the drilling industry as one of the speediest methods of drilling rock. With forces of up to 500Psi, many modern hammers can easily break several hard rocks and can easily penetrate to great depths.
Different variants for different surfaces
Depending upon the geology of the place, the anticipated depth and the required width of drilling hole, the type of DTH hammer required for the ideally drilling any surface may be different. The same hammer certainly can’t work equally well for granite and clay. Some projects that require larger width drilling may even have to procure a cluster hammer, while small boring projects may be served well by a small hammer like Speedrill Hammer.
The life cycle may vary
The overall lifecycle budget should also be an important consideration in getting the right kind of the hammer. Depending upon the operating conditions, geology and materials used in the hammer the average lifecycle may be longer for some while shorter for others. Thus, it may not exactly be the wisest of decisions to simply procure a DTH hammer, just because its cost is lower than others.
Industrial uses of the DTH hammer
Any business requiring the drilling of hard surfaces can make good use of the DTH hammer. Some of the biggest customers of this hammer include the mining industries. From sample extraction to explosive deployment, a hammer can prove to be an extremely useful tool for the industry. Other major users include deep water drilling, oil and gas drilling, construction reinforcement drilling, etc. However, the uses of the hammer aren’t entirely limited to only mining and drilling, with many used in the field of archeology, disaster rescue and even in agriculture. Hence, it’s won’t be an overstatement to say that the DTH hammer is a highly versatile product usable across multiple situations.
