Many people make the mistake of having a website created, and then think the job is finished. Websites however like every other aspect of your business, must be kept fresh, with current content and should be checked regularly to make sure that there are no broken links or other code issues.

First let us think about things from a user’s point of view. They search for your product,The Value of Website Maintenance – Keep Your Website Working for You! Articles and pull up your website only to find a Merry Christmas message, lovely except that it is now Easter. You have compromised the integrity of your business by appearing to pay no attention to your website presence. This is an extreme example but the point is hopefully made.

Make sure your email address is current on your website, this is often overlooked.

If you are running an ecommerce website, most likely you keep your product up to date, removing sold out items, and adding new stock as it arrives. It is just as important to keep your outer static pages updated. Show new product and change with the seasons.

Now I want to explain what search engines look for. If they come to your website regularly and see no changes made whatsoever to the website, their visits gradually decrease until they no longer bother to come and spider your website. What does this mean for you? It can mean a huge drop in the importance given to your listing. Even a minor change will keep the search engines interested in your website, looking for new content or changes.

Many people ignore website maintenance, thinking that it is a large expense that they really cannot justify, or they do not feel confident to make changes themselves and do not realize that there are professionals out there that can do this job for them.

Many companies offer very affordable website maintenance packages, and many others will be happy to simply offer changes or updates when needed for a reasonable fee.

Broken links and stale or outdated content will do your business a lot of harm, this is often easily rectified at a very reasonable cost.

At the very least you should have a good look at your website four times a year, and make changes as necessary. Small updates monthly are highly recommended.

Website owners, understanding the value of reciprocal inks with other websites, actively source out link partners, or pay someone else to do it for them. Once in place, these links are often ignored. This is a mistake your online business cannot afford to make. Many companies will add your link, only to remove it as soon as it is reciprocated, many other companies simply go out of business. The result is dead or unreciprocated links on your own site, that will do you much more harm than good. Your links should be checked on a regular basis. If you do not have the software installed on your website to do this automatically for you, you need to do it yourself, or hire a web company to do it for you. It is time and money well spent.

You created your website as a tool to help your business, make sure that you keep on top of it, to keep it working well for you. Your online presence is often the first impression you make to a potential customer, and you want to make sure it is a good one!
