The first paragraph of this article serves as a brief summary of its content. It discusses how fiction writers, often overlooked in the online writing community, can harness the full potential of the internet to promote their work. The article does not promise financial success or a secret formula for attracting thousands of visitors to your website. Instead, it encourages creative thinking and the use of various resources available on the World Wide Web to enhance and promote your work.
Fiction writers often find themselves at the bottom of the pecking order in the online writing community. Unlike other genres, fiction doesn't promise readers financial success or early retirement. It's unlikely that our books will be used in marketing campaigns or given away as freebies.
Imagine receiving emails like 'Easy Assonance in Eight Easy Steps', 'Build your own sonnet in less than 14 Days' or 'Sign Up Now: This Short Story deal terminates tonight!!!'. Sounds exciting, right? Unfortunately, that's not the reality for most of us.
Writing fiction is a journey of discovery, much like life itself. It involves delving deep into life's marrow, engaging our minds in the pursuit of literary excellence, and laying ourselves bare before our readers. This is far removed from the aggressive world of internet commerce. However, it's high time that we, as fiction writers, learn to use the internet to our advantage.
This article aims to inspire all fiction writers to fully leverage the resources available on the World Wide Web. It serves as a companion piece to my earlier article based on my book 'Writing Fiction for the Internet' link to the book. In that book, I outlined the basics of building a website and marketing your book across the web.
My goal is to help you think creatively and push yourselves to come up with innovative ways of promoting and showcasing your work. I'll guide you on how to use color, sound, and images to enhance your book. I'll help you find the sites you need and share tips that I've learned along the way.
By the end of this journey, I hope you'll have a book that will captivate people's attention.
As an example, I invite you to visit my own website link to the website. This is part of a collection of pages that I set up to promote my novel, 'St Brodag's Isle'.
On this page, I've included music to give it a Celtic feel. I composed the music myself, and I'll share later how you can download the program to do this. I aimed to create a piece that would evoke the 'Riverdance' music in the listener's mind. I'll leave it up to you to decide if I succeeded or not!
I've also highlighted a recurring motif in my novel, the kittiwake, a small gull-like bird that nests on steep sea cliffs. I found this little animation on the internet, and I'll share the links to such sites later.
On this webpage, I've combined words, pictures, and sounds. This is the kind of combination I encourage you to try. As writers, we're adept at handling words. It's time for us to broaden our horizons.
