Decluttering Your Home Before Moving
If you have a home that is almost literally drowning under a tide of personal possessions that you use rarely if never, then you will need to take action and declutter so you travel light during moving.
The following tips will give you some simple pointers on making this happen before moving day, so let us get started with the first one on the list:
- Running short on available space means you will need to have a good look around the cupboard and figure out what should be kept and what needs to go. When it comes down to decluttering, this will be one of the most important moves you need to make. Selling, throwing them away and donating them can all be viable ways you can lighten the load for the coming moving day, but you will first need to figure out the details before you jump.
- If your items happen to be placed on the nightstand let’s say and you lack the necessary space or you want to get rid of most of them, then feel free to do just that – don’t put it off. If you don’t take this step now, the need for more storage will be pretty big eventually and you would do better with smaller amounts of items rather than using more than you can afford to keep around. A good idea to get rid of unwanted items without throwing them away is to organise a yard sale. At the end of the day you are likely to end up with some extra cash to spend on moving boxes for example.
- Take a good look at your current possessions and figure out how to sort them so to make your moving process faster and cheaper. Ask yourself why you keep those items and will you really need them in the foreseeable future. Any non-seasonal items will need to go first, so make sure you go through them and only keep what you need. Get rid of items you have not used for more than a year. It may seem like a bit too much, but it will be a necessary step toward making some free space that you will need around your new home once you arrive after moving. If you keep some of those things that have sentimental value to you, carefully select them and pack them in a special box so that they won’t get lost among the other objects.
- When you’re done with the small things, you will need to work on your furniture as well. It will take a good company for furniture moving, but at the end it will be well worth the effort. Organise your moving process on a room by room basis and take the necessary measures to figure out what sizes of boxes you will need to fit your pieces of furniture. A good tip is to label the boxes accordingly so that it will be easier for you to unpack them in the new place. Get yourself the necessary packing supplies such as tape, newspaper/ packing paper or bubble wrap. Once you have decluttered your home, you will find it easier and even more enjoyable to organise everything in a neat and diligent way.
Although you may feel attached to all your items, you will find it liberating once you get rid of the unnecessary ones and make a fresh start in the new place you choose to be your home.
