In the world of automotive manufacturing, cost-saving strategies often go unnoticed but play a crucial role in the industry's success. This article delves into the intricate details of how companies like BMW are leveraging strategic sourcing from countries like India to achieve significant cost reductions.
Recently, I had the opportunity to speak with a Project Manager of Strategic Sourcing at BMW, who is responsible for sourcing components from India. Although BMW's sourcing from India is still in its early stages, the company is optimistic about the potential benefits. BMW has already begun to take significant steps towards its ultimate goal of deeper localization.
BMW currently assembles the 3-Series and 5-Series models at its Chennai plant in India. However, the term "assembly" might be somewhat misleading. The process primarily involves tightening the final nuts and bolts and conducting a final inspection. This might seem minimal, but it is a crucial part of the overall manufacturing process.
One of the most surprising elements of BMW's sourcing strategy is the seats for the 3-Series (E60) model, which are supplied by the Hanil Lear plant in Chennai. Convincing BMW to source seats from Lear India would have required significant effort and negotiation. Currently, the plant produces around six car sets of seats per day.
Another essential component sourced locally is the plastic trim for door panels, supplied by Tata Johnson Controls. Interestingly, both Lear and Johnson Controls supply the same components for the E60 model in Germany.
While it may seem that BMW is heavily localizing its production, the reality is somewhat different. Most of the components used in the sophisticated seats produced by Hanil Lear are imported. The same goes for Tata Johnson Controls. Their primary role is final assembly rather than full-scale manufacturing.
Despite the limited scope of localization, the cost savings from assembly alone are substantial. Assembling a seat is a labor-intensive process, and the lower labor costs in India contribute significantly to overall savings. Additionally, having a reliable starting point for vendor development allows BMW to gradually increase the number of local suppliers.
It's essential to understand that this strategy is not about low-cost manufacturing of complex products like laptops. Instead, it's about assembling components like power cords at competitive prices. This approach provides a dependable foundation for further localization and cost reduction.
BMW's strategic sourcing from India highlights the hidden depths of cost-saving strategies in the automotive industry. By focusing on labor-intensive assembly processes and gradually increasing local supplier involvement, BMW is setting the stage for significant long-term savings. This approach not only reduces costs but also provides a reliable foundation for future growth and localization.
