5 Tapes Every HVAC Contractor Needs In Their Toolbox

    Every true craftsman knows that it is essential to be prepared for everything the job might throw at them, and in the HVAC field, there is no limit to the unexpected. Different materials and environments demand the use of different types of tape, and coming unprepared to the job at hand can lead to tape failure – costing you time, money, and your reputation.

Here are 5 tapes every HVAC contractor needs in their toolbox:

Foil tape: A UL Listed Foil Tape should be one of your go-to tools for joining and sealing joints, connections, and seams on rigid fiberglass ductboard and flexible air duct. These robust tapes are typically constructed with a release liner and meet UL 181A-P and/or UL 181B-FX qualifications.

Film tape: For sealing certain types of industrial materials, such as reflective insulation or Class 1 Flex Duct, a Film Tape may be a good choice. Film Tapes are highly conformable and easy to tear by hand, making them quick and easy to use. Be sure that your film tape is UL Listed to ensure code compliance.

General Purpose Duct tape: No toolbox is complete without the most versatile repair tool around – a roll of General Purpose Duct Tape. While it is not the right choice for sealing ducts, Duct Tape is great to have around for bundling materials, making minor or temporary repairs, and waterproofing. Be sure to reserve this tape for non-critical aspects of the job or for use in conditioned spaces, as duct tapes are not typically built to withstand extreme temperatures or hold up over time against numerous thermal cycles.

Electrical tape: While not all HVAC technicians will be required to work around electrical conduits and cables, having quick access to a roll of standard black Electrical Tape is a good practice. Electrical Tape may be used to insulate electrical wires, connect cables together, or bundle wiring when needed.

Masking tape: When the nature of the job demands a tape that can be used for temporary adhesion without causing damage or leaving residue behind, a Masking Tape is a great tool to have on hand. Colored Masking Tape is ideal for labeling and color-coding, as well as general purpose bundling.
