Greenkote technology has once again come to the rescue in a complex piece of long term engineering maintenance at a nuclear plant, this time in a harsh UK coastal environment.

When consultants 3RM Associates were asked to provide corrosion proof jointing system to support what was expected to be a long term installation of 100m tall access towers around a nuclear facility on the British coast,Greenkote bolts provide another nuclear solution Articles the challenges were considerable.

Greenkote technology has a proven track record when it comes solving complex coating and protection problems, as was recently highlighted by the news that Greenkote treated tension control bolts are being used at the heart of the solution to encase the Chernobyl nuclear facility in the Ukraine.

High on the list of priorities for the UK project was the need for exceptional corrosion resistance, allied to a need to maintain the free running of fine threaded components.

Under tests carried out by 3RM Associates, components treated with Greenkote technology showed no signs of corrosion and threads remained easily usable, partly because the Greenkote process does not require either internal or external surfaces to be reworked.  In this instance, Greenkote proved itself to be cheaper than galvanising and because corrosion levels were far lower, reduced inspection, maintenance and support costs would be incurred over the life of the project.

The manufacturer’s own tests show Greenkote’s system can sustain in excess of 3000 hours salt spray performance with less than 5% coating loss when combined with bespoke duplex top coat systems making the coating an ideal choice for the construction fastener industry for fixings above M10.

Commenting on the latest application of the technology in the UK, Greenkote chief executive officer Mark Gore said, “Our coatings systems are now being used at the heart of two major nuclear buildings projects, albeit  ones with very different profiles. In both cases though, the need was for a coating system which could deliver outstanding corrosion performance to minimise maintenance and replacement needs. The UK project has added complexity in that our system is live in a harsh coastal environment, where protection against salt spray conditions is vital.”

Greenkote provides its coatings solutions through a global network of coating centres and licensees. Plants and licensees are located in North America, South America, Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Africa.
