In tough economic climates like today,
it can be hard to find a jobs. There are plenty of willing job seekers, but unfortunately, not always enough jobs. In this article, we’ll go through how you can improve your jobs applications to ensure they’re star quality and beat off any rival competition!
Top tips for your CV:
You must ensure your CV doesn’t include any spelling mistakes. Using spell check is not enough! Allow yourself to check through it, but ask various friends or family members to check as well so that you don’t miss anything.
Also, try to keep your CV short. When recruiting staff, employers don’t want to read through your life story in pages and pages of your CV, so limit yourself to 2 A4 pages if possible.
Whenever you complete a new qualification or finish a jobs, make sure you update your CV. Having an out of date CV is pointless in jobs applications as employers want to know what you’ve been doing and they don’t care about the Saturday jobs you had 20 years ago!
Top Tips for Jobs Searching:
Using a jobs board can be a great method of jobs searching. You can register your CV and be head-hunted by 1000s of the UK’s employers – meaning you don’t have the hassle of searching!
Jobs boards aim to advertise 1000s of jobs vacancies on their sites to help jobsseekers. Although you can get niche sites, specialising in specific locations or industries, many are generalist and so you can find jobs opportunities across the whole of the UK and in over 70 different sectors.
Jobs boards also introduce a number of tools like email alerts, smart phone apps and easy to use search tools to help you find your perfect jobs quickly and easily.
Top Tips for Interviews:
Always ensure you prepare thoroughly before the interview. Plan your outfit, your travel route and any extra materials you may need to take along with you and leave in plenty of time.
Make sure you know what is expected of you for the interview, as they will vary. Some will include presentations, group tasks, tests and/or one-to-one interviews – knowing what is going to happen will help you mentally and physically prepare for the typically nerve-wracking situation.
Try to practice answering questions too. There are a number of ‘typical’ questions that an interviewer may ask, so practice in front of the mirror or with a friend about how you’d answer these:
What do you know about the company? (Always research thoroughly beforehand so you know they’re basic information etc)
Why do you think I should hire you over someone else? (Try to list your unique qualities here, and link your previous experience to the jobs at hand and how this will benefit you.)
Give an example of how you’ve previously demonstrated your ability to…. (Try and prepare a few examples beforehand about how you may have demonstrated a particular quality that is necessary to this role i.e. attention to detail, time management etc.)
