Since the release of the Apple iPad, several manufacturers have concentrated their efforts on developing rival tablet devices. One of these is Samsung, who has recently released the Samsung Galaxy Tab.
This sleek and stylish looking device is somewhat smaller than Apple’s rival device at 190.1x 120.5x 12 mm which is ideally sized for portability whilst still being able to take advantage of the large 7 inch TFT capacitive touchscreen. This is great for viewing photos and videos as well as gaming and using the user interface in general. This is due to a pixel configuration of 600x 1024 which is able to display up to 16million dazzling and clear colours. The highly customisable and intuitive TouchWiz UI is installed as Samsung’s custom Android interface.
In order to view and operate the screen in both portrait and landscape modes, there is a built-in accelerometer sensor which automatically senses the angle at which the unit is held, and built as the contents of the screen accordingly. Another innovative feature called Swype is also included. This is installed on several of the manufacturers’ previous mobile phones and operates in conjunction with the onscreen QWERTY keyboard. It allows users to slide their finger from one key to the next without having to take their finger off the screen, in the manufacturers claim this can offer a 30% improvement to text entry speeds.
The Samsung Galaxy Tab also operates as a standalone mobile phone, unlike the Apple iPad. This relies on both EDGE & GPRS to keep it connected to the appropriate cellular networks, whereas access to the Internet relies on both 3G and Wi-Fi where available. Both of these options allow for great browsing experience, which is enhanced by Adobe Flash 10.1 support which allows users to take advantage of multimedia elements of websites such as games and videos. The full package of Google features is included to do this running the Android 2.2 Froyo OS. Additional connectivity features include Bluetooth and micro USB as well as GPS with A-GPS support which allows location based functions to operate.
Another advantage that the Samsung Galaxy Tab has over its iPad rival is a 3.15 mega pixel digital camera with Autofocus and LED flash. This also doubles up as a video camera offering an alternative to taking still images. There is a second camera located on the front of the device which operates at 1.3 mega pixels and can be used for video calling or as a webcam.
There are 16 GB and 32 GB models available, meaning each one can potentially store thousands of files and various formats, the their media files or documents thanks to the included media player and Thinkfree Office compatibility (which supports MS Office documents). Users also have the option to utilise the integrated microSD card slot which can accommodate a memory card of up to 32 GB, allowing him further storage can be attained.
With features such as the impressive touch screen, full HD video playback, advanced Internet browsing and productivity tools and powerful 1 GHz processor being the tip of the iceberg, it is clear to see the Samsung Galaxy Tab becoming very popular indeed.
