Its easy to talk about the Samsung Tocco; it’s a whole lot easier than NOT talking about it. That’s because this phone is just such a treat. I know I can be a bit overly enthusiastic at times, and this phone has a definite tendency to provoke that in me, but I love technology, and I particularly love technology done well.
I know I keep coming back to it, but I am still just blown away by the beautiful styling of the phone before even turning it on. Samsung has taken touch screen technology to a new level with this phone, and they’ve made sure they have adequate display space for the touch screen to make sure that you get the full benefit of it. That means that you have almost a full 3 inches to work with. The finish is brushed aluminum with a black underlay complementing the color. Overall, the phone is designed to be about the same size as a credit card, although they have yet to make quite that slim yet. (Sure to come in the not too distant future, though…) It weighs in at 106 grams, or about the same weight as a fairly large candy bar.
The camera offers amazing capabilities for a convergent camera phone, and would even hold up well to the competition as a stand alone phone – it’s that powerful. Offering 5 megapixels of resolution, the camera offers some very advanced features.
The Samsung Tocco phone offers the world the debut of a camera phone with a built in smile detector. The camera uses Smile Shot to automatically take pictures when it recognizes that your subject is smiling.
There is of course built in image stabilization, a great feature for a phone that will be mostly on the go. You have also have a Power LED as well as a built in flash, and you even have the option of a quick view of your photos.
Some of my favorite capabilities that the phone offers are the shooting options. You can shoot in traditional single shot mode, or use Multishot, Mosaicshot, in Frames or in Panorama mode. The built in photo editor means that you can edit your photos on the fly. There’s several built in effects you can add as well, such as applying an antique sepia like tone to your photos or give them a black and white or negative effect.
You have the usual multimedia capabilities like a music and video player, and the phone can record in video as well. You can use the MP3 format for your ring tones, as well.
There are 223 megabytes of onboard memory as well as a MicroSD slot for expansion.
These are great capabilities to include when a camera phone has the kinds of functions this one does. There’s a built in document viewer and you can do mobile printing using BPP and Pictbridge.
Very, very strong camera phone with a lot of muscle. The only thing this phone won’t do is wash the dishes, but I’ll certainly be looking for that in future editions (smile).
