Sony Ericsson has targeted the compact smartphone market, releasing the XPERIA X10 Mini. This is currently the smallest Android smartphone on the market, but despite its mini dimensions, it still packs a powerful punch.
Obviously, one of the major draws of this phone is its compact size. Measuring just 83x 50x 16mm, it is very pocket friendly, especially given its light weight of just 88 grams.
Despite the small size of the 2.55 inch YFY capacitive touchscreen, this does not make it any less responsive. In fact it is great at displaying photos and video with its pixel resolution of 240x 320 with the ability to display up to 65K colours. The screen is scratch resistant protecting it should it get dropped, a scenario that many users are all too familiar with. An accelerometer sensor is built into the screen, providing an auto-rotate function.
Users are alerted to incoming calls and text messages via ringing and vibration, with the option to assign MP3 files as ringtones allowing a degree of customisation. Handsfree communication is easily carried out by the use of the built in speakerphone system, along with the option to utilise the 3.5 mm audio jack. The latter can also accommodate earphones for listening to music via the internal media player, as well as the use of handsfree headsets.
With 128 MB of internal memory, a reasonable amount of data can be stored; however there is also a micro SD card slot. This comes with a 2 GB card already included, which can be replaced with a card of up to 16 GB should further storage be required. The internal phonebook can store a large amount of contacts, all of which can have a photo assigned to them thanks to the photocall feature.
Class 10 GPRS and EDGE connections keep the phone connected to cellular networks, whilst internet access comes in the form of 3G and Wi-Fi. 3G internet access is provided via an HSDPA connection in conjunction with HSUPA. The web browser supports HTML allowing the vast majority of websites to display all their features and content.
A versatile 5 MP camera is included within the handset, and results in superb still images thanks to a pixel resolution of 2560x 1920. Autofocus and an LED flash aid in taking great looking pictures, whilst the ability to shoot video in VGA at 30 fps offers an alternative method of image capture. Geo-tagging allows users to view the location at which photos were taken, thanks to GPS.
A whole host of media and social networking features are included to keep users entertained for hours on end, whilst the availability of several different colour variants makes it an attractive option for the style conscious mobile phone user.
All in all, the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 Mini offers a great intro to first time Android smartphone users, whilst appealing also to those looking for a funky entertainment device which is sure to turn heads for all the right reasons.
