It is a lot easier to have a website search engine optimized if you have that optimization in mind from the first moment that you start your website.

With that in mind, here are some tips that can help you to make sure that your site is ready to be listed in the top rankings of a search from the very beginning:

* Keywords: Your research should have included assembling a set of keywords for your site, even before you registered a domain name. Check out other sites in the same market to get an idea for what is being used.

You can either adopt these same keywords and hope to out-compete these other sites, or you can choose variations on these keywords in order to build you business.

* Domain Name: Its also a good idea to have your domain name include some of the keywords on your list.

* Think Of Spiders: Search engines use programs called spiders that crawl through the code of your site in order to index it. You should understand that spiders only see the code, so if your website has lots of video and images, the spiders will overlook them.

If you do have lots of media files, make sure that each has a keyword-rich description accompanying it.

* Build Content: As your site develops, you will need to add more content. At this point its time to focus on any other appropriate keywords.

For example, if your site is about stamp collecting, then you'll start off with keywords like: stamps, philately (a fancy word for studying stamps), etc.

Once you have your main pages established, you can start adding content that is tangential to your main site that could focus on keywords and phrases like: stamp history, celebrity stamps, etc.

* Update Your Content: If you end up trying to add more keywords to your site, make sure to go back through your old content and place those keywords in relevant places.

Following the stamp example above, if you have an old article on your site called "The Famous Faces On Stamps" and you decide you want the "celebrity stamp" key phrase to be part of your site, then update that title to something like "Who's Who In Celebrity Stamps."
