Why do we make it a priority to take care of our wardrobe, visit the salon on regular basis for our nails and hair care, but we neglect to keep our jewelry sparkling and cared for. Here are some tips to keep your jewelry in tip top shape with some products from your kitchen.

Here are some tips to keep your jewelry in tip top shape with some products from your kitchen.

Clean gold and plated gold: This method is safe for both plated gold and gold jewelry. Add a few drops of dish washing soap (such as dawn) to a pan of warm water and soak for 10 minutes or longer. Remove and brush with a soft bristle brush (tooth brush works fine). Rinse thoroughly, wipe with a soft cloth and let air dry completely.

Cleaning Gemstone: If your gemstone is attached by glue to a setting do not submerge in water, instead dip a cloth in warm water with a few drops of dish washing soap to clean your jewelry. You may also brush with a soft bristled brush, rinse, wipe with a soft cloth and allow to air dry completely.

Cleaning a diamond ring: Use the same cleaning method for a diamond that you would for cleaning gold. Remember that a diamonds metal setting is more sensitive to scratches than the diamond, so be certain you have a soft brush. You may also need a wooden tooth pick to clean crevices.

Cleaning Unfilled Diamonds: Unfilled diamonds do not have a special coating placed on the stone and can be cleaned with a solution of ammonia and water.

Cleaning jewelry with a variety of gemstones: Some softer stones need the weakest cleaning method. If unsure of a safe cleaning solution for a particular stone you can ask your jeweler.
