Since the Three Mile Creek Trail was constructed a few years ago, Leavenworth city officials have had problems with a Fifth Street bridge that spans across the creek.
“We fixed them and then they came back,” said Mike McDonald, public works director for the city.
McDonald said he doesn’t know if the 2009 construction of the trail, which runs under one end of the bridge, is responsible.
“It may have been going on before then, but we never noticed,” he said.

The city has now hired a company, TranSystems Corporation, to study the problems. City commissioners approved a proposal from the company for engineering services Tuesday. The cost of the work is not to exceed $15,910.
Despite the problems, McDonald said the bridge is safe for traffic.

The same is not true of a sidewalk that is adjacent to the street portion of the bridge. The sidewalk has been closed due to safety concerns.
According to McDonald, there are three areas of concern when it comes to the bridge.
One is drainage from uphill and south of the bridge. This is said to be overtopping inlets and curbing just south of the bridge, causing erosion of the grounds, sidewalks and retaining walls on both sides of the street.
Another problem is settling in the roadway that the city has twice repaired. The first time, officials didn’t know why there had been settling in the area. The second time, the problem was attributed to a leaking water line.
