IIT Mandi is one of the new IITs established in 2009. It is not as popular as the old-established IITs but it is gradually being compared to them.
One of the eight new IITs established by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, IIT Mandi was established in the year 2009. Spread over 520 acres of land along river Uhl, it has a world class campus with an academic environment. It has modern classrooms, two central mess, two canteens, stationary store, bank, ATM as well as a provision store.
Currently the south campus is fully functional and most of the students,faculty and staff reside here. The north campus is getting constructed at a very good pace and is about to start functioning in the coming months. IIT Mandi was mentored by IIT Roorkee, which hosted the first batch of students.
The admission process to undergraduate programmes in IIT Mandi or for any IIT is solely based on a student’s performance in JEE i.e. Joint Entrance Examination which is conducted by all seven IITs. For postgraduate programmes, the eligibility is a valid GATE score (or GRE) in appropriate discipline and a minimum of 8.0 CGPA on a 10.0 point scale.
IIT Mandi offers B.Tech degree in undergraduate programme in four disciplines namely: Computer Science and Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. In postgraduate programmes, it offers M.S (by research), M.Sc and M.Tech. IIT Mandi also has collaboration programmes with many foreign universities.
Speaking of scholarships, there is 100% tuition fee waiver for SC/ST/PH students whereas for those whose family income is less than 1 lakh per annum, full remission of tuition fee is done. Also there is remission of 2/3rd of the tuition fee whose family income is between 1 lakh and 5 lakh.
IIT Mandi is slowly starting to attract more recruiters every year. With the highest package of 26.4 lakhs and the average ranging between 6-12 lakhs(depending on course), recruiters like Google, IBM, Microsoft, Amazon, Tata Motors, TCS, DRDO are coming every year.
Apart from studies and placement, IIT Mandi also hosts it’s annual technical cum cultural fest Exodia. It was started in the year 2012 by a bunch of enthusiast IITians. It is a three day long event. There is also an annual inter college sports fest Rann-Neeti, which is also a three day long event held in the month of september in which colleges from all over India are free to participate.
IIT Mandi has been ranked among the top 40 colleges of India according to the ranking by Edu Rand in 2015 and is also honoured as the first IIT in Himalayas.
