A funding package of £35 million has been granted to develop 5G network technology at a new UK research centre.
Based at the University of Surrey, the facility will work on the successor to 4G with money provided by mobile operators, infrastructure providers and the UK Research Partnership Investment Fund.

Professor Rahim Tafazolli, head of the university's Centre for Communication Systems Research, said 4G technology is already "old hat" for academics.
He told BBC News: "We started working on 4G ten years ago. Being a university we have to be one step ahead of industry."

The professor added that 5G should be ready to launch by 2020 and will be necessary to accommodate the rapidly growing level of mobile data traffic.
