1.) The Naming
The name ‘Australia’ was derived from Latin word ‘Terra Australis’ by British explorer Matthew Flinders. Terra Australis is one of the several names that was suggested for this landmass in the south. The other names proposed for this wonder downunder were ‘Terra Australis Ignota,’ & ‘Terra Australis Incognita.’
2.) The First Fleet
The first fleet which comprised of eleven ships that contained convicts arrived from Britain on January 18, 1778, at Botany Bay. But they found the bay inappropriate for settlement, so they moved up to the coast of Port Jackson on January 26, 1788. At present, the settlement is called Sydney.
3.) The Rebellions
In 1850, gold was discovered in Australia and in 1854, the first ‘Eureka Rebellion’ was formed and it revolted against the colonial authority which resulted in a civil war. It was fought between miners and the colonial forces of Australia which lasted just for thirty minutes and resulted in twenty-seven deaths.
4.) The Federation
On January 1, 1901, the six colonies of Australia, namely New South Wales, Queensland, Swan River Colony, South Australia, Van Dieman’s Land, Victoria and Western Australia joined together to become the Commonwealth of Australia. From that time, Australia was declared an independent nation rather than a British colony.
5.) World War-I History
Australians consider the World War-I as the ‘birth of the nation.’ On April 25, 1915, the Australian Imperial Forces(AIF) landed on the Turkish coast and took control of the important Dardanelles waterway, but it costed them 60,000 lives. The Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) was bogged down in a bloody stalemate for months with Ottoman troops.
6.) White Australia Policy
Australia followed the ‘White Australia Policy’ between 1901 to 1970s that particularly excluded the people of non-European descents from immigrating to Australia. The policy came in response to Chinese immigrants that arrived during the gold rush as well as the importation of Pacific Islanders for work.
7.) Prime Minister Dismissal
On November 11, 1975, Governor General Sir John Kerr who was the Queen’s representative at that time controversially dismissed the Prime Minister Gough Whitlam and replaced him by his political opponent and rival, Malcolm Fraser.
