The National Oceanography Centre Southampton exists within the University of Southampton’s Faculty of Natural and Environmental Sciences.
The 2010 National Student Survey Ocean Sciences category (covering oceanography and marine biology) ranked us top of all Russell Group universities on all criteria, with a special commendation for learning resources on our oceanography degrees.
These oceanography degrees include: BSc Marine Biology with Oceanography, BNatSci Ocean & Earth Science and Chemistry (specialising in Oceans and Climate), MNatSci Ocean & Earth Science and Chemistry (specialising in Oceans and Climate). But that’s not all...
We also provide the following degrees in oceanography as well: BSc Ocean Chemistry, MSci Ocean, Earth and Climate Science, MSci Oceanography, BSc Oceanography (single honours), BSc Oceanography with foundation year, MSci Oceanography with French, BSc Oceanography with Physical Geography, and MSci Oceanography with study abroad.
All of our oceanography degrees are accredited by The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology – giving you the confidence to know that your qualification is both respected and valued.
Each one comprises a mix of compulsory and optional modules that allow you to specialise. These programmes also include extra maths, to help with tasks such as data handling and modelling.
Most modules bring together students from different courses, and individual modules may have pre-requisites, such as an A level in a certain subject, or completion of an earlier module.
In addition, you may be able to take 'recommended' or 'approved' modules as options from related academic disciplines, such as: archaology, biology, chemistry, geography and physics.
