NEW YORK, NY – Chelsea’s Agora Gallery is set to showcase the original works of Nobuko Saji in the "Breaking with Realism" exhibition. The event kicks off on September 2, 2017, and runs until September 22, 2017, with an opening reception on Thursday, September 7, from 6-8 pm.
For Nobuko Saji, creating art is a deeply meditative process. Her paintings serve as a conduit to connect with the spirit of the natural world. "I harvest my creative power from nature," she explains. Through her hands, nature’s rhythms and motifs are transformed into compelling yet subtle graphic patterns. The circle, a dominant element in her work, holds significant power in Japanese art and Zen philosophy, symbolizing minimalism and an inherent sense of simplicity. These qualities are evident in her images, where even the slightest variations in color, form, and texture can unveil a multitude of meanings.
While simplicity is the cornerstone of Saji’s style, her approach to achieving it is diverse and multifaceted. Her mixed media paintings incorporate materials such as plaster, gels, acrylics, and oil paint. This blend of mediums and textures results in works that possess a vibrant and intricate physical presence. By merging physicality with spirituality, Saji offers a unique body of work. Born in Japan, she now resides and creates in the United States.
The exhibition will also feature works from a diverse group of artists, including:
"Breaking with Realism" is a group exhibition that delves into the insights of 18 artists on themes of spirituality, humanity, and the natural world. Through a variety of mediums, the exhibition explores how dynamic arrangements of color, texture, line, and composition can influence the visceral nature of the human experience.
By exploring the duality of simplicity and complexity in nature, Nobuko Saji’s work offers a profound reflection on the interconnectedness of the physical and spiritual realms. Her contributions to the "Breaking with Realism" exhibition promise to be a captivating experience for all attendees.
