Choosing the right electricity supplier to suit your particular circumstances can make a significant difference to your annual electricity bill. Finding the right supplier will depend on a number of factors,Choosing the Right Electricity Supplier: EDF Energy Articles including the amount of electricity you use, your desired payment method and other personal preferences. If you are looking for a new electricity provider, EDF Energy could be the right choice for you.

EDF Energy

EDF Energy is one of the 'big six' energy companies, and one of the largest electricity providers in the UK, supplying energy to over 5 million homes and businesses. EDF Energy is one of the most trusted energy companies and has been in operation since 2003, employing 15,000 people and producing a significant amount of their energy from renewable sources. They also endeavour to generate a large percentage of their energy from nuclear or renewable sources, which helps to reduce the amount of non-renewable fuel sources currently being depleted.

EDF Energy Tariffs

EDF Energy offers a choice of tariffs. The Standard tariff is a variable tariff, which means that the price of your gas and electricity could rise or fall, depending on a range of factors, including the wholesale cost of energy. While this tariff offers competitive rates for the unit price of energy, there is no guarantee that prices will not soar in the coming months. On the other hand, unlike with fixed price tariffs, customers choosing this variable tariff could benefit from any price reductions in the future.

The EDF Energy Standard tariff also offers an annual discount for dual fuel customers (those who buy both gas and electricity from EDF Energy). There are also no cancellation charges, so you won't have to pay a fee if you choose to switch to another supplier before the end of your contract. The average annual dual fuel bill of those paying by Direct Debit is estimated at £1,252.

The Blue Price Promise tariff is a fixed price tariff, which means that the unit price of your gas and electricity is frozen for a set amount of time. With the Blue Price Promise, energy prices are fixed until February 2015, offering peace of mind for those who are concerned about the rising cost of gas and electricity. During the course of your contract, you will not be subject to any price rises, but you will also not benefit from any price cuts. This tariff comes with a price promise, which means that EDF Energy will let you know if there is a cheaper deal available to suit your circumstances.

Electricity generated for customers using the Blue Price Promise tariff is also backed by low-carbon generation, meaning that every unit of electricity you use is matched, unit for unit, with electricity that is generated from a nuclear source. EDF Energy also offers a Blue Price Promise with gas offset, which enables customers to offset the carbon emissions produced by their gas supply, although this comes with a slightly higher unit price. The average annual dual fuel bill for those paying by Direct Debit is £1,192. As with the Standard tariff, there are no early cancellation fees.

Discounts and Rewards

EDF Energy offers ongoing monthly rewards, known as Thank yous, to their energy customers. Thanks yous are given to customers on a monthly basis, with dual fuel customers receiving double the amount of Thank yous as single fuel customers. Each month, customers can enter their details online to see if they have won a prize, which can include discount vouchers, weekend breaks and tickets for live events. Rewards are available as gold, silver and bronze prizes, with gold prizes usually being the most expensive, while bronze prizes are usually in the form of discounts or vouchers for high street stores. In addition to the Monthly rewards scheme, EDF Energy offers a 6% annual discount for customers who choose to pay by Direct Debit, while dual fuel customers can also receive discounts to further lower the cost of their energy bills.

Finding an electricity supplier that is best suited to your needs may take some trial and error. Choosing a tariff with no cancellation fees, such as the tariffs offered by EDF Energy, allows you to try out different tariffs and companies, without having to pay a penalty or cancellation fee.
