Diabetes is a number of diseases that involve problems with the hormone insulin and considered to be one of the most dangerous metabolic diseases of the modern world. The condition develops quite suddenly and the factors that cause it to occur are still not well known.
In general, diabetes affects the body's ability to use blood sugar for energy, so it stays in the blood, and often leads to blindness, heart and blood vessel disease, strokes, kidney failure, amputations, and nerve damage. If not diagnosed and treated with insulin, a person can lapse into a life-threatening diabetic coma. Thus, it is very important to prevent diabetes. Knowing its causes and symptoms one can avoid the disease.
The symptoms that are most common among diabetic patients are as follows: fatigue or nausea, depression, frequent urination, unusual thirst, weight loss, blurred vision, frequent infections, and slow healing of wounds or sores.
There are several factors which may cause diabetes. Nowadays, scientists cannot find out what exactly causes the body’s immune system to attack the beta cells, but it is supposed that autoimmune, genetic, and environmental factors, possibly virus infections, are involved.
In many cases diabetes occurs due to poor insulin metabolism in the body, when the cells in the muscles, liver, and fat do not use insulin properly, or due to hormonal deficiencies or malfunctioning of the pancreas, resulted in reduced insulin production.
If diabetes runs in the family for many years, then heredity plays a major role in development of diabetes. But it is possible to prevent the development of diabetes in a baby by maintaining blood glucose level normal during pregnancy, so that the diabetes is not passed into the child.
Some risk factors may be associated with cardiovascular disease risk or just stress.
Obesity is also one of the major factors causing diabetes. Because of increased fat in the body, the muscle and tissue cells become resistant to insulin and it leads to high blood sugar level in blood hyperglycemia and finally diabetes.
Thus, often diabetes occurs due to a wrong nutrition rich in carbohydrates, fats, proteins. Eating too much sugar or jiggery, such as jam, chocolates, desserts, ice creams, candy, sweetened drinks, fruits with high sugar and juices from them, alcohol such as wines can finely lead to diabetes development. So, to prevent the disease it is very important to keep the right diet and lead a healthy life.
