Snoring seems to be a common problem, but nowadays it is one of the main reasons for breakups or divorce. The irritating snoring noises affect not only the normal life of a snorer, but the whole family.

If you suffer from snoring and want to get rid of this problem, the first thing you need to do is discover why you snore. In most cases the snorer may be snoring due to throat infections, asthma, weak muscles of the throat and jaws, or caused by enlarged soft palate and uvula at the back of the mouth. If the back of the tongue is large or if the tongue is able to slip backwards, it can narrow the space through which air flows in the pharynx, which can lead to vibrations and snoring.

Generally snoring is classified as mild to heavy snoring that  can significantly ruin health in its later stages decreasing  quality of life in the form of risk of cardiovascular diseases, high blood pressure, stress, stroke, decreased sexual function, obstructive sleep apnea, complications with diabetes, headache and even premature death.

In case of mild forms of snoring caused by swelling of the lining of your nose, a doctor may prescribe an inhaled steroid or nose sprays  that should be taken before bedtime.

For more severe forms of snoring, resulted from sleep apnea, surgical procedures or continuous positive airway pressure may be prescribed. For example, chin straps, nasal strips, masks worn over the nose and/or mouth during the night, might be helpful in many cases.

Once your jaw or mouth has some abnormalities, which lead to nasal obstruction, it may be corrected with dental appliance. Surgery is also available as a method of treating severe snoring. It involves intrusive throat stretching, jaw and palette alteration and adenoid removal.

However, often simple lifestyle changes can help stop snoring. Lifestyle changes include losing weight, avoiding alcohol and heavy meals, sedatives and antihistamines at least four hours before you sleep or sleeping on your side rather than on your back. If you are allergic, try to eliminate allergens in the bedroom by removing pets, regularly washing your sheets in hot water to eliminate dust mites and any mold.
