Allowing the body time to relax is an important part of the healing process and having regular Reiki or Massage treatments will give you much needed ‘time out’ but also a chance to reduce your chemical stress levels.

Massage can help to reduce stress levels and can reduce the physical toxins (cortisol) that is released into to body.

Cortisol is produced by the adrenal gland and released in response to the bodies stress signals. This natural response is there to help us deal with the flight or fight mechanism and is only intended to be for a short period of time. In today’s modern world, we live in this state constantly. Higher and more prolonged levels of cortisol in the bloodstream can have the following effects on the body:

  • Increase blood pressure

  • Impaired cognitive performance

  • Weakened immune system

  • Suppressed thyroid function

  • Blood sugar imbalances such as hyperglycemia

  • Decreased bone density

  • Decrease in muscle tissue

To keep cortisol levels healthy and under control, relaxation such as massage or Reiki treatments should take place after the fight or flight response has occurred. This will reduce the levels of cortisol within the bloody stream and improve your over sense of well being.
