Mothers who conceived twins are healthier and happier.
The study by Ken R. Smith, a demographer, a Professor of Family and Consumer Studies, and the Director of the University of Utah's Pedigree and Population Resource (sustains and supervises the Utah Population Database) published and exposed in the May 2011 online edition of the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B that mothers who normally conceive and deliver twins are healthier regardless of the Canada drugs that they have taken.
From the Utah Population Database, the study researchers extracted records on about 59,000 monogamous women who were born from 1870 to 1899, and lived at least the age of 50. Results show that 4,600 of women who lived a minimum of 50 years gave birth to twins.
Further, the study suggests that mothers of twins had more kids than usual, had a minimal gap amid births, and were mostly at their menopausal stage when they gave birth to their youngest child.
"The prevailing view is that the burden of childbearing on women is heavier when bearing twins," Smith stated. "But we found the opposite: women who naturally bear twins in fact live longer and are actually more fertile."
However, Smith elaborated that the conclusion of linking longer life to giving birth to twins does not suggest that having twins is healthy for females. In fact, the study did not include females who died during delivery nor those who died prior menopausal; and, their consumption of Canadian drugs were disregarded. What the study covered are only those who arrived at the age of 50 the least. In lieu, the study implies that healthier women are more likely expected to bear twins.
"This study has been able to identify – and it's a fairly novel result – another important factor that contributes to health and longevity in later years, namely, that women bearing twins appear to be healthier," Smith believed. "That innate healthiness is contributing to their ability to have twins, and it is also contributing to their longevity."
Thus, having twins is not a factor for a mother to live longer but rather health is a contributing factor in having twins. And, Canadian prescription drugs have to be considered helpful but should not entirely be relied upon.
