Rosacea is a chronic skin condition which commonly affects the face of the patient. Facial blushing or flushing is a classic symptom of Rosacea. In addition to the facial flushing, itching and burning sensations are frequently reported. As to is sensistivity to temperatures e.g. hot/cold. There are differing types of Rosacea, Acne Rosacea, Ocular Rosacea and Rhinophyma being the most common types.
The most common type, Acne Rosacea, is characterised by facial redness, flushing/blushing of the face, visible broken capillaries, itching and burning sensation in the face. If left untreated or undiagnosed, pustules can form on the face, commonly around the cheeks. The skin is also generally dry.
Ocular RosaceaIn this type of Rosacea the eyes are affected and as a result become easily irritated, bloodshot and itchy. The eyelids have a swollen appearance and are generally red in colour. As with Acne Rosacea, the face is usaully affected too, resulting in a red face, dry skin and the itching and burning sensation.
RhinophymaWith this type of Rosacea the nose is affected the worse. Increased blood flow to the face, acting in synonymy with visible capilaries results in fluid oozing from the blood vessels causing visible swelling of the nose. Over time the skin becomes enlarged and thickens resulting in a bulbous nose characteristic with this type of Rosacea.
