Why yeast infection during pregnancy can occur, the risks associated with it and what you can do to treat it
Women are not usually aware of this fact, but a yeast infection during pregnancy is quite common. This is because there is a higher level of estrogen available which contributes to the increase of glycogen, a sugar which feeds yeast and allows it to multiply and thrive happily.
Yeast infections during pregnancy have the same symptoms as in those who are not pregnant, such as an immediate burning, itching, sensation upon urination which cannot be relieved. Until treatment is sought, the infection will continue to increase, the itching will become incessant, and there also may be pain and cramping in the stomach. Obtaining treatment as early as possible is the best resolution to keep it from progressing.
Once it is suspected an infection is present, a gynecologist should be contacted and an appointment set up for proper diagnosis. Gynecologists are highly aware a yeast infection during pregnancy is possible, so there is no need to be embarrassed or ashamed. It is a natural but unfortunate occurrence in many pregnant women. But, relief is in sight, because medication will include a suppository which is considered safe for use during pregnancy. Oral antifungal medications are unsafe for pregnant women and should never be prescribed.
Usually, treatment with antifungal suppositories are for seven days total. The itching may stop with the very first treatment, still the suppositories should be taken for the whole time period specified, to be sure the infection is eradicated. Some women find soaking in a nice warm bath brings relief from the itching and burning, but should never add bubble bath or any other perfumed product to the bath water, as it may increase irritation and itching, and induce a rash as well. If the itching continues after three or four days, it may be time to ask the gynecologist for another suppository prescription which may be more effective. Another thing to remember, is eat less sugar, gluten and trans fats, and add in more fresh vegetables and lean chicken to boost the immune system.
When there is a yeast infection during pregnancy, women may have questions about safety to their unborn child. They can rest assured, the infection will not harm their child even when the infection is present at childbirth. In this case, the child is still not harmed, but may be born with thrush, an infection of the cheeks and mouth which is easily treated and not at all serious. If the child is born with thrush, it does not necessarily mean the mother has a yeast infection as thrush is very common in infants anyway.
