Garage organizers have come a long way. Gone are the days of a simple shelf and a 2x4 hanging rack. Now there are literally hundreds of options for organizing our garages into spaces that are clean and useful.
When I was a young I lived with my Grandparents for a time. I have a lot of memories from that year. Their house was big and had lots of places to explore and enjoy. Hiding places were abundant and we were never at a loss for things to do. But, as great as the house was, it was the garage and the garden shed that hold the magic for me, now that it is 30 years later. The garden shed smelled of grass clippings and gasoline. The bikes and other miscellaneous items were kept out there, and to me it seemed like all good things came from that shed. I remember watching my Grandpa make and do things out of that simple shed that most people nowadays wouldn't even try to do. If something broke, he fixed it. If something had to be made, he made it. It was a different time with a different mentality about how to do things.
My Grandpa probably never even thought about garage organizers as something you deliberately plan and purchase for the garage. For him, it was sufficient to just hang a simple shelf or two. I do remember that he had pieces of 2x4 sticking out from the studs to hand ladders and extension cords on. Pretty simple stuff. So now that we are in the 21st century, we no longer content ourselves with such things. Now we have to have more. And I'm not saying that is a bad thing. Options are good, and we certainly have them when it comes to garage organizers.
There are a myriad of products available for organizing your garage that just might impress you. Specialty racks and bins make it possible to store just about anything neatly and with purpose. All those sport balls, skis and snowboards, bikes and helmets, roller blades and skateboards, can now go in their own special places. There are companies that make racks just for storing fishing rods and other gear. Then there are the cabinets. If you want plastic, wood, or metal, it is all available and in many colors, configurations, and price points. Modular storage cabinets are popular because they can be customized for each unique space.
Of all the garage organizers out there, probably my favorite is the overhead storage systems. These come in various configurations but are basically bins that rest on racks that are installed on the ceiling. There is so much unused space there that this really keeps the areas below, where there is so much going on, free from clutter.
You can certainly opt for simple shelving and simple wooden racks, but you no longer have to. You can get as fancy and involved with garage organizers as your budget and imagination will allow. Go for it!
