This article looks at drain flies and how best combat them and get them out of your home.
Drain flies are one of the most interesting pest I have ever seen. These tiny creatures seem to be a hybrid of a fly and a moth . drain flies only grow to be about one sixth of an inch long. If seen up close they seem to have a fuzzy/hairy exterior with extremely short wings resembling those of a moth. They have an antenna that is made of about thirteen segments in which the drain flies use to navigate around. These unique creatures use their antennas to forage around for food. Because of their body type drain flies are usually bad fliers only being able to travel short distances and usually in a frenzied manner. Drain flies are drawn towards damp places. Many homeowners have complained that if they have just painted a new room they will find dozens of these tiny flying insects stuck to their freshly painted still wet walls.
How To Prevent
One of the first ways homeowners can prevent drain flies from entering is by purchasing cheese cloth. Cheese cloth is a tightly woven cloth that is sowed tightly enough that it will not allow any pest inside. It is best to drape the cheese cloth over open windows so you can still enjoy the fresh air minus the annoying pest.
Health Risk
Drain flies unlike many other insects are not known to attack humans directly through biting—they do however harm humans through their natural behavior. Drain flies are attracted to damp places and can typically be found in areas such as sewers, land mills and garbage cans. Many of those locations are a diseases “new favorite hot spot”. Being that drain flies linger in damp areas such as sewers they are prone to contracting diseases that they can spread as soon as they leave their home.
Eradication
Drain flies as their name suggests reside in areas such as drains. Many home owners realize that their home has been invaded usually after a long trip where they may have had stagnant water laying around. If so drain flies gravitate towards it and begin to breed. The best way to combat these flies is by first cleaning your pipes. Many stores nowadays carry pipe cleaners which are long pipes with a brush at the end that allows you to scrape the walls of the pipes to ensure it is completely clean.
Once that has been completed you may opt to use a chemical product to ensure the job is done. Just cleaning the pipes kills off the offspring but the adult flying insects may need a little more push and thus the chemical products should be able to do the trick.
