Where the material comes from

Reclaimed pine flooring is wood that is used as floor material today. Where these pieces of lumber come from, is an entirely different aspect of history. These kinds of lumber are actually taken from old buildings that have been around for several decades, some about a hundred or so years. The story behind this goes back to a hundred to one hundred fifty years ago. In the United States of America, before the first settlers came, coniferous trees were abundant in the many forests. These were remarkable trees that have been left to grow for decades, making them hardy, large and full of good heartwood. The Native Americans here had little use for large lumber pieces because their homes were not made of this material entirely and because some communities traveled to different locations when the weather changed. When the original settlers came from across the seas, they cut down trees to make their houses and other buildings. By the early 1900’s, despite efforts to replant coniferous trees, almost all of the original forests were gone, replanted, ether by man or naturally. Today, older buildings that were partially or fully made with that lumber are being taken apart to make way for newer buildings. Recycling is a good way of conserving the resources of our planet especially since trees are being harvested younger and younger these days to accommodate the demands of builders.
