The two most important tools to have in your toolbox are the hammer and some screwdrivers.  These are the most common ways that you'll be fastening things to walls.  When you want to hang a picture, you might need to make a new hook for it, and it's best not to be caught unawares.  While there are lightweight hammers on the market, you should probably just get a standard sized hammer to make sure you have something that will be useable for pretty much any job.

As far as screwdrivers go, you will need more than one.  It is probably a good idea to get a small set of screwdrivers.  Most sets will come with a few different sizes of screwdrivers.  You should also pay attention to the heads on each one.  You will need to make sure that you have some of the flathead screwdrivers as well as some Philip's head.  That way, you'll have the right screwdriver for any job.

Make sure you have a few nails and screws of various sizes in the toolbox as well!  You never know when you'll need a spare.

Pliers are a very good addition to any tool box.  These are helpful for holding pipes or other pieces of equipment.  It's a good idea to also keep a small piece of cloth in the toolbox so that you can put it between the pliers and what you're gripping - this way, you can avoid scratching pipes if you are worried about it.

Finally, you should make sure that you have a wrench.  The wrench will definitely become your friend very quickly the minute you have to repair a leak in your kitchen or bathroom.  This way, you can just tighten the nuts and bolts and put everything back together.
