Have you ever considered offering a woodworking crib as a gift for a new baby? I could be the perfect gift for someone in the family who has already everything. There is nothing more original than a piece of furniture made with love by a family member.
My dad build a woodworking crib way back when my oldest sister was born. At the moment,
he didn't gave it much time, they did not own much money to purchase one and that was how folks were doing things, by building themselves. He did not own all these impressive power tools we have nowadays and did the crib using hand tools.
At that time the crib went to me and my younger brother later on. Afterward it landed into the attic for quite a while.
When my oldest boy was on the way, I realised that my wife was shopping to buy baby furniture but completely forgot about this crib, which I did not even know much about it yet. But my mom remembered it was somewhere into the attic and showed it to us one time while we were over.
Just at that time I realised how beautiful and simple this piece of furniture was. I too realised that my dad, who had not much experience in the field of woodworking at the moment, did it with no blueprints, power tools and did a beautiful piece of work.
We were so happy to take it at home and to place it inside the baby's room for the reason that of its exceptionality and of course because it had been within our family for ever.
We used it for our son and our dauther's bed once they were babies and after that it went to our own attic as well.
Now a few years back, it was my own son and his wife's turn to expect a baby. I told them to delay before buying a crib. When I showed them the very same woodworking crib my dad made for us, they were so ecstatic to take it home, it reminded us how content we were to get it too. They'd never anticipated to acquire a third generation crib. They vow to by no means sell it and to keep it into the family like we did.
Even if the crib is old, it still has all it's charm and it's old elegance is what makes it so special. Under neat the bed we wrote the names of all the babies who slept into it. I sanded it a little before giving it to my son and I apply a fresh coat of varnish on it, so it brings out the beauty of the old wood.
What was only a baby crib at that time is at this time a treasured antique piece of furniture that will for all time bring memories to all of us.
To close the story, once my grandson was born my dad and I went to my son's home to meet the baby for the first time. I had forgot to tell my dad that I gave his self made crib to my son. After he walked into the baby"s room and looked at it, it took him a few seconds to realised this was his crib.
He gave all of us at that moment a huge loving smile and thank me for giving it to him. I could picture many memories inside his eyes when he said that. I will remember this minute for always and so does my son.
