The prospect of learning HTML can be daunting for many new internet marketers or aspiring online business owners. The thought of having to understand this language to create or modify their future web pages often raises the question, "Do I really need to know HTML?" This was a concern I shared when I first contemplated taking my business online. However, I soon discovered that HTML, or HyperText Markup Language, is not as intimidating as it seems.
HTML is one of the primary languages used to create web pages. It allows you to integrate text, images, sounds, and links into a single page. Initially, I had no programming background or understanding of HTML. It seemed like an insurmountable hurdle. However, I was determined to launch my online business and didn't have the budget to outsource my web page development.
I began to explore HTML on various discussion boards and was surprised by the wealth of free information available. Numerous sites offer lessons on how to use HTML to construct a web page. Additionally, there are many sites that provide free graphics, free CGI, and Java scripts. Before long, I had assembled a basic web page and started to understand some of the coding, allowing me to experiment with different page designs.
During my HTML research, I discovered several software products that simplify the process of creating a web page. These programs allow you to build an impressive web page without needing to understand HTML. I started with a program called "Hot Dog" (available at www.sausage.com.au), which costs just under $100. Despite having little or no experience with HTML, I found it easy to learn and use. I later purchased Frontpage2000 but continued to use Hot Dog due to its simplicity. If you're interested in Frontpage, you can find tips and tutorials at www.microsoft.com/frontpage.
These types of programs generate the HTML code for you. You simply enter the text and use drop-down lists to select the desired HTML code action. As you use it, you learn what each piece of code can do for your page.
There are many sites where you can find free information on how to build your own web pages. Here are a few:
These are just a few of the many sites that offer free help. There are also sites where you can find other resources to design your own site/page, all for free. For links to free CGI scripts, Java scripts, banner generation services, graphics, and more, visit our free resource page at www.homebizlink.com/freeserv.htm.
Don't let the HTML of a page you admire intimidate you or deter you from your goal of taking your business online. It may seem overwhelming at first, but with time and practice, you will learn it. Experiment with it, modify it, test it, and you will master it. Before you know it, you'll be online with your own web pages.
