Training Vs. Hiring From the Outside
Making productive changes are good but should you bring someone from the outside to help you?
Putting together an agenda to become more effective is a difficult thing to do. Men and women go to school to do this as a living. That's why it is important to decide what you really want to get from the initiative. It's always better to train the individuals that you have in place because then you get a better understanding of the concepts for the men and women that are already familiar with the work.
But you can bring somebody in from the outside in order to start the process. The biggest problem with bringing a person from the outside is the familiarity with the company and its employees. A person that is trained from within already has a certain amount of knowledge about the business that they are dealing with,
and additionally, they have firsthand knowledge and relationships with the employees that they are going to be working with.
Because you have to believe that any decisions made and any changes made will meet with extreme hesitation and scrutiny from the current staff. You are not able to blame them of course, they had been trained a certain way and may even have written some of the processes that they use themselves. It is very difficult for any person, no matter what position they are in, to make a change off of blind faith, without questioning and at least some apprehension.
This is especially true if it's an outsider telling them to do it. But from a friendly face, somebody that they have known and worked with, it may be an easier transition. There are some positives with bringing in someone from the outside. Chief among them is their impartiality. They are not friends with these people; they have not been doing things the same way for so long that it would be hard for them to change it now.
They also have seen things work and things that do not work in other places and so they bring that experience with them. Also, they are a fresh set of eyes, and filled with all sorts of new ideas that may not have even occurred to some people that were too close to the situation. These new points of view, new ideas can be just the thing that you need to change the deteriorating situation within your own business. That's not to say it is that bad, but making the changes early, before the problems become overwhelming, might not be such a bad idea.
