After putting every single encyclopedia salesman the world over out of work, Wikipedia is now in trouble itself. It apparently loses too many English editors, endangering its quality control processes.
Wikipedia, one of the worlds biggest websites, has been reportedly losing many of its English language editors, which negatively affect its ability to inform many people with its mission as a source of knowledge online.
Wikipedia has lost many English editors in the past 5 years, a study revealed. According to Aaron Halfaker of the University of Minnesota, who led the study of investigating this intriguing issue, the volunteer editors have declined from around 56,000 in 2007 to about 35,000 at the end of 2012.
The study believes that there were numerous reasons or factors that negatively affect the decline in the number of volunteer English language editors. One is the massively increasing use of automated programs, another was that the rules set in place to keep Wikipedia to maintain quality and consistency have also become so restrictive that may also causes potential new authors from contributing knowledge on the web. In addition, many new contributors are being discouraged when they put in their time and effort, only to see that their entry has been deleted.
It may be discouraging for newcomers or less competent editors when their contributions were deleted, however, it is necessary that this information or knowledge should be properly and clearly translated or rendered to the audience. After all, Wikipedia is one of the biggest websites that has been helpful to many of us.
The founder of Wikipedia, Jimmy Wales has in fact seriously announced that Wikipedia is slowly dying; however, they are doing everything that they can to help Wikipedia get cool and informative again. It may be alarming for Wikipedia to lose thousands of editors in just five years; however, they are trying to save this website from closing.
In addition, many people believe that this issue will trigger some knowledge seekers to turn their back from using Wikipedia, because most of the users will think that the entry or information written in the English language may not be informative and thus may not be helpful to people, especially perhaps to students.
It has been a great opportunity for many people in the world to have free access to using Wikipedia. Wikipedia has been a great source of important knowledge and information, especially to students. Thus, it is essential to have enough English language editors of the website that can surely render the message to the readers effectively.
Due to massive influence of the internet to the people, many of us have free access to the internet anytime we want, however, it still necessary that whatever information we need to seek from the help of the internet, we make sure that this information is correct and reliable.
