If you have to buy and install wheel stops, this guide is essential to know your onions. So, to prevent making any mistakes, read this till the very end.

Wheel stop installation, usually made out of rubber or polythene, should be resistant to water and heat and should reflect light, especially at night for high visibility. People prefer different wheel stops for various reasons, mainly due to the starting material. Rubber wheel stops are highly reflective and are best suited for use in parking lots, warehouses, and even factories, while the polyethylene wheel stops last longer, are strong, durable.

Here are some tips you could use when you're buying a wheel stop

  1. Select a space for installation
  2. There are different designs of wheel stops for other cars. Know the kind of vehicles that would make use of the wheel stops you're planning to buy
  3. To determine the thickness, you need to know or estimate the intensity of traffic volume you'd be getting.

You may need to write the above tips down on a sheet of paper and make a plan based on these tips. This will help you during the purchase.

Now that that's cleared out, the next thing you need to know is how to install a wheel stop.

DIY installation differs based on the type of surface you plan on installing the item on.

Concrete surfaces

Items you'll need

A 14mm masonry drill bit(hammer drill), a hammer, a socket(17mm), M10 screw fixings that usually come with the wheel stop, and a hand broom(optional).

Procedure for installation

  1. At the exact place where you'd prefer for installation, place the concrete wheel stop at that spot.
  2. Carefully drill the concrete through the holes in the wheel stop using a hammer drill (14mm masonry drill bit)
  3. After you've achieved step 2, remove the wheel stop. Next, use the hand broom or any other cleaning equipment you have (such as an industrial vacuum)to clean that space.
  4. Commence drilling the holes you've made till about 120 mm. Clean again using the hand broom.
  5. Check for the plastic plug components, then fix and hammer them into the holes you've drilled.
  6. Line the wheel stops in place over the holes
  7. Place the M10 screws over the holes in the wheel stop and make it enter into the plastic plugs beneath.
  8. Use the socket to tighten the M10 screws.

Gravel surfaces

You need all essential items as that of a concrete surface except screws. Rood spikes are used in place and come with the supplied wheel stop.

Procedure for installation

  1. Follow steps 1 to 4 of the procedure for installation on concrete surfaces.
  2. Line the wheel stop over the drilled holes
  3. Fix and hammer the road spikes through the holes in the wheel stop and into the ground.
