The first impression of your site or ezine is often formed by the listings that appear in search results. If these listings are outdated or incorrect, it can lead to a loss of potential business. Therefore, it's crucial to regularly update your listings to ensure they accurately represent your current offerings.
While searching for new content for my ezine, "Dee's Helpful Info," I decided to check how many listings were associated with it. To my surprise, there were several hundred listings, many of which I had completely forgotten about. As I started to go through the list, I encountered several issues.
The first problem was that I didn't have the IDs and passwords for some of the listings. When I first started as an entrepreneur, I used Netscape 4.7, which didn't have the capability to store these crucial details. I recommend using Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher, along with a handy tool called Gator. Both of these can remember your login details for you. Gator even allows multiple users, making it a favorite among my children. You can download the latest version of Gator here.
Upon viewing my listing, I was taken aback by the outdated information. It's essential to update your listings regularly, at least once a month, and keep track of the sites you've submitted a listing to. I had not only gained hundreds of subscribers but also designed a new website. However, these listings were directing everyone to a non-existent site. Moreover, my subscription address had also changed. I initially used Aureate Group Mail, then switched to Listbot, and finally settled with Topica. The takeaway here is to update your listings whenever you make significant changes.
As I continued down the list, I encountered another problem. Some listings couldn't be updated because there was no contact email or login box. Be wary of sites like these.
Lastly, I found listings that were not related to my newsletter at all. The keywords "Dee's," "Helpful," "Info," and "Newsletter" described many other listings not related to my newsletter. This made me consider changing the name of my newsletter.
After trying several search engines, I found that Yahoo provided the best results. But what's the main takeaway from this experience? If your listing is incorrect, you're losing business. An incorrect email address or website URL can drive potential customers away. Therefore, it's crucial to stay one step ahead and update your listings regularly.
