How I knew I was Chosen

By Valerie S. Green

I grew up thoroughly consumed with the ideals of being an actress/fashion designer. I knew from a very young age that the entertainment industry was where I wanted to work. It never occurred to me that the reality of getting there might differ from what I read in magazines and saw on television. I finished high school,How I Know I Was Chosen Articles attended college, graduated from a Fine Arts Program, completed a fashion designer course, and I then assumed my door was ready to open. Not quite so, over 3 years later, several hundred mail outs to agencies, countless interviews, a few episodes of background work on Life Time Television’s Army Wives, a 5 week class acting class by Army Wives’ Wendy Davis (aka- Col Burton) on Life Time Television still landed me no agent, no TV Commercial work, or Film Roles. So after meeting all these people and getting compliments all the time about how gifted I was, no one chose me for anything beyond what I had already done.    Then one day out of nowhere I was asked to host a TV show, then a week later I was asked to create a signature perfume to be called “Chosen”.  It was doing this time the word chosen began to echo deep in my soul.

Most often when we talk about someone being chosen, we are reverting back to historical days during the early biblical times. The bible has recorded in its pages many that were called the chosen of God. So I asked myself this question, how does a person know that they have been chosen of God?

The longer I live the more I realize that the chosen people of God are more than just a physical nation or a certain race. As a young person growing up I did not feel I was one of the chosen ones until recently when I began to understand that each of us has a unique role in life that only we can fore fill. Knowing this one fact should allow us to see ourselves as being special (Chosen).  Initially I felt rejected by those that I had met in the entertainment industry, and because I wasn’t chosen by them at first, I felt they had placed no value on me.

But I realize now that God had already Chosen me, even before I was in my mother’s womb he said that he knew me. True value only comes from him. Knowing this has changed my attitude and I am now truly inspired to pursue my dreams, but I am less dependent on man and more dependent on God.

I now choose to stay in control of my life, and so I choose to live by choice, not by chance, I choose to be motivated, not manipulated, to make improvements, not excuses. I choose to excel, not just to compete; I choose self-esteem based on my achievements, not self-pity or the pity of others. I choose not to be distracted by the random opinion of other people. And most of all I choose to listen to that still voice early in the morning or whenever it speaks to me and tells me to follow the plan that has been set out for my life. The plan that makes my life complete and successful.  This is the attitude I live by, because I realize the impact it has on my life. Attitude, to me is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than what other people might think, say or do. The remarkable thing is, I have a choice everyday regarding the attitude I will have for that day and so do you.
