The Drift HD action camera is a new compact camera for videoing extreme and action sports. It can do HD video and has a lot of cool features such as color screen and remote control. But is it worth the high price?
Drift Innovation is one of the leading manufacturers in the world of action cameras. They have had successive big hit cameras such as the HD170, HD170 Stealth and now it's brand new release of the Drift HD.
The new Drift HD is set to be a direct rival to the GoPro HERO action camera because of the new compact design which is 25 % smaller in both size and weight than the previous releases from Drift Innovation cameras.
But is the small size enough to justify the bigger price tag when compared to the other cameras with similar size and specs? This review will help you get a good picture to see if it's worth getting over its competitors.
The Design
If you're familiar with the HD170 Stealth, then you probably see the Drift HD as a shrunken version of its older brother. The resemblance is uncanny, the only big difference being that it's much shorter. It looks like the designers just chopped off the end of the Drift HD170 and released a new camera.
This is not a bad thing because the design of the older model was very functional, but it was a little too bulky. With the Drift HD, you get the same functionality but in a smaller, more compact unit.
The built-in color 1.5" screen is still present which makes for no mistakes when lining up your shot and also for watching back your footage instantly on the spot.
Video Quality
Of course, with all the latest high-end action cameras, you get to record in HD with a couple of settings to choose from.
1080p at 25 or 30 frames per second lets you record optimum high-def video.
If you don't need your videos that high, you can opt for 720p at 25, 30, 50 and 60 frames per second. 720p at 60 fps will let you produce amazingly clear, slow motion videos.
Other reviews have exposed that the quality of the sound is not that great when using the internal mic. It seems fine if you're not too fussed on recording commentary in your videos, but if commentary in your videos is what you're after, there is the external mic jack which you can use to record clear sound.
Price And Other Features
The Drift HD is currently on sale for around US$369, but depending on where you buy it could be more or less. It is in the higher price range of HD action cameras, but for this extra price you get some extra features that other cameras don't come with.
We already mentioned the color screen, but you also get a remote control which allows you to switch your record button on and off with a range of 5 meters (17 feet). Other features include a new mount attachment design and all new mount designs for even more choices of mounting.
It is definitely a step up from the last few models, and if you're a fan or collector of action cameras, the Drift HD won't disappoint.
