Dimmable LED power supply with constant voltage output is designed to transform AC voltage to DC voltage and with a fixed voltage output and variable current output. It is also a dimmer that enable to adjust the light intensity. There are various types of dimming interface available: 0-10V, DALI, DMX and RF/WiFi wireless.
A constant voltage power supply outputs a fixed DC voltage and variable current range, which is suitable for LED strips and LED ribbons with constant voltage input. Generally the voltage can be available in 12VDC, 24VDC or 36VDC. To use a dimmable LED power supply, you have to make sure that your LED lamps are dimmable.
To control the dimmable power supply, a control unit that outputs dimming signal to it is required. Traditional signals are 0/1-10V and resistor. But they are not intelligent enough and suitable for big lighting projects. Emerging dimming protocols such as DALI, DMX and RF/WiFi are becoming more and more popular.
A dimmable LED power supply with DMX interface enables to receive DMX signal, the control unit can be connected with it via DMX512 bus, each bus capacity can be up to 512 lamps due to 512 addresses it has. All power supplies connected to the bus can be controlled individually or be grouped to control. DMX also enable scene function. The LED driver with DALI interface enables to receive DALI signal, the control unit can be connected with it via DALI bus, each DALI bus capacity can be up to 64 lamps since it has 64 short addresses. Besides short address, DALI also has 16 groups addresses and 16 scene addresses.
To choose a reliable dimmable LED power supply, there are many key parameters to consider. Power factor accounts first, which defines the percentage of power that does useful work. Second is efficiency, which defines how energy efficient a driver is. Both of them are the most important parameters. An LED driver with higher power factor and efficiency will be more reliable. Another parameter that should be considered is PWM frequency that determines whether the driver has flickering and buzzing noise when dimming. Generally, a high frequency can lead to noise without flickering, and a low frequency can result in flickering but no noise.
