Leather sofas are popular for many reasons. Here are some of them.
The first thing that comes to mind is my own preference for leather sofas over other types. For one thing, I can't picture actually being able to relax on something as awful as plastic or vinyl. Sticky, tacky, and weird seem to sum up what I think of those choices. Then there's wicker. Uh, no. I have no earthly idea what the appeal is to wicker as indoor furniture. I guess to me it just seems like something that belongs out on the porch or patio. And yes, I have actually been in homes where people have wicker sofas in their living rooms. I know, weird huh?
Then there's more traditional fabrics. Upholstery comes in so many colors, patterns, and textures that it is sort of difficult to generalize about these. However, on the whole, I just don't like upholstered sofas because they are hard to clean if they get spilled on, they easily snag and tear, and just don't last as long as leather sofas. So, by way of contrast to other options, leather stands out as a clear preference for me.
Also on the positive side, leather sofas appeal to me simply for what they are. To me, they represent a rugged durability and a rich quality that only leather can give. I like the way that leather has a natural grain and irregularity. I like that it can be dyed so many different colors. Maybe it's the inner cowboy in me, but I just think leather is something special, something American, something warm and pleasing.
Our lives are surrounded by leather for a reason, it is a quality, long-lasting, and durable material. I guarantee you, leather sofas are only one thing many people prefer. When I get on my cruiser motorcycle to go out and ride, I reach for my leather jacket. When I hop in my favorite car, it isn't velour or fabric I want against me, it's leather. I suspect that many of you can relate.
Caring for leather sofas is a snap, too. With fabrics, you may or may not be able to clean out the inevitable spills and stains that befall them. With leather, it's just not an issue. A clean towel can quickly sop up most liquid mishaps, and a warm washcloth easily keeps the dust washed away. If you want, you can always apply any number of leather care products that just wipe on. These keep the leather supple and treated so it can stay with you for years to come.
The benefits of leather sofas are many. They last a long time, they look great, they exude quality and class, and they are easy to care for. The shortcomings of other coverings are also many, and while there is certainly a place for all sorts of other sofas, in my opinion leather rules the day.
