Dentures aren't just for the elderly. Many celebrities and other notable figures have worn them.
The rich and famous wear false teeth? It's true. Dentures are more common than you think,
primarily because they're economical, long lasting, and customizable. And, of course, many deceased celebrities and notable historical figures lived long before implants and veneers. False teeth have been around since 700BC, when the Etruscans created them from animal and human teeth. Even with the advent of new cosmetic dentistry; however, traditional bridges and full sets still remain a popular option.
George Washington
Although fabled to have wooden teeth, the first president of the United States actually had much more modern sets of dentures. Tests performed by scientists have proven that George's teeth were actually made of a composite of materials that included gold, animal teeth, ivory, and some metals. Washington started to lose teeth as early as his 20's, but even in the 1700's a complete smile was still, clearly, quite important.
Winston Churchill
If you thought getting dentures for yourself is expensive, you can't even imagine how much it would cost you to buy Winston Churchill's teeth. The former prime minister's fake ones fetched a royal sum of $24,000 at an auction. That's still cheaper than a full set of implants, but unfortunately, the cost didn't include Churchill's wisdom or political influence.
Clark Gable
In the late 1930's, few actors captured more women's eyes than Clark Gable. He was a legend not only for his charm and good looks, but also for his acting chops. While on screen he wooed millions of ladies, off screen he may not have been as debonair as he was usually portrayed. Reportedly, his co-star in Gone with the Wind, Vivian Leigh, was disturbed by his halitosis during their famous kiss. Supposedly he did not take good enough care of his dentures, or perhaps he just ate tuna salad for lunch.
Emma Watson
The famous Harry Potter starlet didn't always have a bright, perfect smile. During the filming of her second movie, she had lost a few baby teeth leaving her with visible gaps. To keep moviegoers focused on her acting and not her missing teeth, she had to wear a temporary set of dentures, which is common among young actors and models in Hollywood.
Janice Dickinson
The former supermodel who has also starred in numerous reality television shows was recently red-faced after a few false teeth popped out of her mouth while out with friends. Crowns, veneers, and other forms of cosmetic dentistry are extremely common in the entertainment industry, so much so that many acting and modeling agencies won't accept a client until they have a perfect smile. Since most up and coming actors haven't hit the big dollars yet, false teeth are much more cost-effective than implants or caps.
There are several other celebrities, sports figures, politicians, and even models that choose to wear false teeth. The reason why you don't hear about it or notice is that they look so natural! Why admit to it if you don't have to? Contact your dentist today for more information.
