Chances are, if you have ever been surfing on the net for a particular subject, you have run across a chat room or forum.  These can actually be gold mines for your business if you use them properly. 

Advertising is one of the biggest components of having and promoting your own business.  It is also the most expensive part of your business, therefore, it is important to use free methods of advertising as much as possible.

The first thing you want to do is find only 2 or three forums to start marketing to.  Many people think it is important to find as many forums as you can, but if you don’t have the time to keep up with it, it won’t work.  Also, you will start to run across some of the same people and sound redundant.

The main thing you want to make sure you do is comment in a way that does not promote yourself or your business.  You don’t want to look like you are advertising.  Let people know what you like to do outside of your business.  This creates some relationships that are vital to the growth you are wanting to create.

If you want to become an active member of a forum, which is a good thing to do, you must post comments on a regular basis.  There will be people who are looking for help with something, looking for answers, etc.  It is important to read other people’s posts and try to answer some of their questions if you can.  The more you post and help other people, the more they will see you as an expert.  You are starting to then build some good reputations with people. 

When you are searching for forums, obviously it is good to find a forum that is relevant to your business.  You also want to have a lot of members in a forum because this is how you will get the most traffic to your site. 

There are some forums that ban any kind of advertisement whatsoever.  You definitely want to stay away from this type of forum, as it would be wrong to advertise where it is not wanted.  You also want to be able to create your own signature with your business address on there as well.  If the forum doesn’t allow this, there really is no reason to post there.
