Many simplify the Law of Attraction by describing it as the principle that "our thoughts create things." But is it really this simple or does it go deeper? This article explores the role of emotion and subconscious beliefs in manifesting.
The Law of Attraction says that we attract to our lives whatever we give our attention, energy and focus to, whether it is wanted or unwanted. It is often simplified into the formula, “think positive thoughts and you’ll attract positive experiences” or the opposite, “think negative thoughts and you’ll attract negative experiences.”
But is it really this simple? If it were, why wouldn’t anyone easily and effortlessly have what they wanted just by focusing their thinking into a positive direction? How come, even when you try to focus on the positive, you still find yourself manifesting lack, frustration, limitation and unhappiness? Having a positive frame of mind isn’t as simple as reciting affirmations or choosing positive thoughts. It goes much deeper than that, to the level of emotion and core beliefs that one has about oneself, life and the universe.
So many, the majority really, suffer from a core set of beliefs that are self-limiting and self-defeating. Practicing those beliefs to the point where they are unconscious habits results in manifestations that “match” the essence of those patterns.
I said that you attract into your life whatever you give your attention, energy and focus to, whether you want or not. Let’s put that another way. Let’s call your attention, your anticipation, your energy, your emotion, and your focus—the here and now. Most people anticipate an event, summon an emotion from it, and then focus on how that event reflects where they are now. If the attention/anticipation/emotion/focus is negative rather than positive, a cycle of negative manifestation is perpetuated via the Law of attraction.
For example, if you’re in debt, think about how you react to the phone ringing. You anticipate the ‘collector call’ and instantly you get manifestations that match your subconscious patterning: you feel tension in your body, you feel fearful or ashamed or angry or depressed, and you instantly fill with more negative thoughts regarding your financial situation. Even if the caller is not a collector, you have now launched the latest cycle of unwanted manifestations to come regarding your finances and the situation cannot improve.
This cycle is the reason that so much of what we don’t want keeps showing up in our lives. To make matters worse, it seems that we don’t have any control over this pattern. It’s an automatic behavior based on years of programming and it becomes “who we are.” In order to change your reality for the better, simply thinking positively doesn’t work because at the gut level of emotion it feels like a lie—those thoughts aren’t “who you really are.” They are like slapping on a happy face or putting a Band-Aid over a gaping wound. What you must do is change your subconscious thought.
Subconscious thought is really just practiced thought. Abraham-Hicks often says, “A belief is just a thought you keep thinking.” To clarify, it’s a thought you keep thinking automatically and reflexively. It’s how a driver comes to drive a car without thinking about each step, and it can be achieved through training and practice.
And this is the challenge for anyone who really wants to "master" the Law of Attraction. It is possible to reprogram your beliefs and there are many methods out there for doing so. Many take years, but others take only a short while. One of the best programs I've found is specifically designed around LOA principles, and is part of an overall training program called Unlock the Power of You.
