Side effects of Condoms

Condoms are among the most used birth control methods and popular form of prevention against sexually transmitted diseases. Latex is used to manufacture condoms. However, some brands produce condoms with animal skin. Despite its great benefits, the side effects cannot be neglected. Learn them to avoid any complication.

Latex Allergy
 
Some people are allergic to a protein that is found in the latex rubber used in making condoms, says the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI). If latex sensitive people use condom, they might experience symptoms such as:

• runny nose
• sneezing
• itching
• dizziness
• wheezing
• Lightheaded feeling.

The allergy can take a severe turn if it causes anaphylaxis which is a life-threatening disease. However, only two people out of hundred complain about latex allergy, which is relatively low and not an alarming concern. The AAAAI has suggested synthetic rubber condom for latex allergic people.

Pregnancy Risk
 
Using a does not mean that you are fully protected against the risk of conception. However, condoms have been found to be 98 per cent safe for preventing pregnancy. Condoms can be effectively used if used in the correct manner. Out of 100, almost 15 women conceive despite using condoms due to its improper usage. Before purchasing a condom, check out its expiry date. Old or expired condoms are brittle and can rupture during the sexual act. Use of petroleum jelly or cream when using condoms weakens the latex and it can rupture while having sex.

Risk of STDs
 
Condoms are known to provide effective protection against HIV and reduce the risk of other sexual diseases, such as syphilis, chlamydia, HPV and gonorrhoea. But condoms do not provide protection against infections of the outer skin. Scabies infection and molluscum contagiosum are two such infections.

According to the American Social Health Association, condoms reduce the risk of contracting genital herpes through sexual intercourse but are ineffective in protecting all the parts of the skin.
 
People who use condoms made from animal skin must know that such condoms are ineffective in preventing transfer of STDs.

Resistance of Men in Using condoms
 
Many men feel that their level of thrill and excitement wanes if they use condoms. Some can’t feel the same sensation when they wear it. For some, it’s painful to penetrate while using condoms.
